rjp
Working on my 26 trans. I have the shifting tower off and wood like to take apart the lock and collar to replate. How does it come apart? can someone point me in the right direction? Thanks Roger
theKiwi
Do you have the key for the lock? Is the lock unlocked? This won't work if the lock is locked (I found that out the hard way with a lock for which I had no key at the time). There is a hole in the front of the lock housing - you have to push a thin punch in through that hole to press the lock plunger backwards - then you can slide the lock housing up the gear lever and get it off the top. rjp
Yes I have the Key and it does work. The hole that you are speaking of is it about 1/4 "
theKiwi
Yes, but you need a much smaller punch than ¼" - the hole that goes through the gear lever shaft is much smaller than that - you have to reach through the gear lever shaft to press the lock plunger. Once you have that then the lock housing can slide upwards. Roger
rjp
Ok, I'll clean it out good then maybe I can see it better. Thanks a bunch.
theKiwi
This is what you're looking for - the small hold in the groove that is in the gear lever shaft Roger

theKiwi
There is no screw holding the lock cylinder in - it is a small pin. I had to drill it out of both of the locks I dismantled. Look up the drawings on the club's website - the lock is to be bright nickel. Roger
rjp
I had to drill the pins out also. 1 pin takes the cover plate off, that worked. The other pin I drilled out but can not get the cylinder to move. May I ask what you did or did yours fall right out? HaHa. Soaking with penetrating oil right now. theKiwi
It's pressed in there - there are a whole bunch of dimples on the cylinder to make it a tight fit. Get a decent sized hunk of brass, sitting on a solid surface (like an anvil or good solid bench) , and then bang the lock upside down on it repeatedly in the area where the hole for the gear lever shaft is until the cylinder starts to slide out. I don't know if that's the official way, but it worked for me. Roger

rjp
I soaked it all night, tried and no movement, does a person dare use heat or will that damage springs in lock?
theKiwi
Heating it won't help - it's a friction fit into the lock housing - quite apart from any damage it might do to the lock, which is made of brass. I had to bang it very very hard, many many times to get the lock cylinder to start moving. theKiwi
I paid $50 each for the lock housing and the cup that is below it - $117 or something like that for both with chemical disposal fees and sales tax.
