John_S_in_Penna 3,252
To add to Alsancle's data: Mount Washington is windy. There's often a stiff wind when the weather is tranquil down below. It holds the record for the highest wind speed ever recorded on the surface of the earth: 231 miles per hour, much stronger than the most extreme hurricane. In fact, even this coming week (according to a weather website), the forecasted wind speeds are typically 50 to 65 m.p.h. each day!

The idea of driving up there feels a little scary, especially in an old car. F.E. Stanley did it in a steam car back in 1905. People don't realize how nasty Mount Washington is. The look at the height and say that isn't much. 161 people have died on that mountain, many in the summer months when it is 80 degrees at the base and it turns to 20 over the tree line with a snap blizzard. Mount Washington is just a hill. Pulled the entire climb in third gear with my Pierce 12. It did burn 1/3 of a tank of gas in seven miles! He we are just below the tree line.

That is REAL FALL FOLIAGE - we don't get that here in New Orleans - (just rearranged roofs and buildings with a hurricane), but on the other hand, we don't get winter either, and get to enjoy Top-Down weather all year We have driven Mount Washington many times in our vintage cars and enjoyed it every time: 1912 Oakland Touring while on the 1998 Glidden Tour 1934 Buick 34-57 Sedan after VMCCA Nickle Tour in Bar Harbor, Maine 1941 Cadillac Cabriolet while attending 2016 Glidden Tour in North Conway, New Hampshire 1954 Cadillac convertible after VMCCA Chrome Glidden Tour in Bar Harbor, Maine

The way my dad told it, he bet the guy the cost of the toll fee that the Bronco would make it and it did, so he didn’t have to pay. 😆

pkhammer 218
Three days ago we trekked over to Blackwater Falls State park near Davis, West Va. Sorry no car in the shot of Blackwater Canyon but the colors were awesome. This area of West Virginia is a fantastic place to have a tour. Around Davis, Canaan Valley, And Elkins the scenery is fantastic and there are great roads to travel that aren't heavily traveled.

It looked pretty good for a 12 or 14 year old CT car! Seems like these were all white till 70s, then they all seemed blue till the minivans came in and changed it all.
