Guest DanielmeguelT Posted October 19, 2017 Posted October 19, 2017 (edited) I have a Chrysler pot metal name tag from a 1967 car with manufactured curve. I want to straighten it out. My question is how to work with pot metal without destroying or meltening it? Edited October 19, 2017 by DanielmeguelT (see edit history)
Spinneyhill Posted October 19, 2017 Posted October 19, 2017 Clamp it to a flat piece of steel, LIGHTLY. Pour boiling water over it and tighten the clamp(s) immediately, A LITTLE. Repeat as necessary.
Restorer32 Posted October 19, 2017 Posted October 19, 2017 We use clamps and a heat gun. Heat then bend slightly over several days.
Spinneyhill Posted October 19, 2017 Posted October 19, 2017 Yep. Either way, don't get it hotter than 175 oC = 350 oF else it will fall apart = soften and melt suddenly.
viv w Posted October 19, 2017 Posted October 19, 2017 A heat gun works great. Clamp one end to a steel section, heat gently and slowly tighten a clamp on the other side. Don't get it too hot, ideally you want to get it just hot enough that it becomes maleable. Heatguns also work great for getting dents out of aluminum panels, plastic bumpers and parts.
