Guest hokeypix Posted October 17, 2017 Posted October 17, 2017 I'm not a car person at all, but a general antique/vintage dealer. Got this antique Templar Motor Oil can out of an old cellar. Is it indeed related to the Templar Motors Co? (The typeface looks very similar). If so, I'm assuming it's quite a rarity. I haven't brushed a speck of dust off it, but I figure it'll clean up nicely, even though it's obviously not a 10. I'd appreciate any info on it, date (I know Templar was only around for a short period in the early 1900s), rarity and value. I'm considering running it through an automobilia auction or a private sale. I also reached out to the guy who runs the Templar Museum, but I'm not sure if I have the correct email address. It may also be possible to revisit the cellar or garage to search for anything else Templar-related, if it's worth it..... Thanks in advance for any info!
trimacar Posted October 17, 2017 Posted October 17, 2017 Templar Motors was located in Cleveland, Ohio. What city and town are stated on can? I'd think if it was related it would state something on the can to that end....neat find, though....
Guest hokeypix Posted November 3, 2017 Posted November 3, 2017 Thanks all. Turns out it's not related to Templar Motors, but in any case it seems very scarce, as I can't find another one online. Any thoughts on age or value? Is there a specialty forum for motor oil cans?
Terry Bond Posted November 3, 2017 Posted November 3, 2017 Do you collect cans? Post something under the memorabilia heading and start a discussion there. It might help you decide on how scarce it is. Like a lot of things, it may be a brand that was available in a small limited area, so it would be rare to someone on the opposite side of the country, but common locally. Looking at the style of writing, etc. I feel it's a 1950s piece, Condition is everything, and graphics are equally important. Early stuff depicting automobiles will command top dollar, while later cans like this that are just another brand name are closer to the bottom of the scale. To a dedicated collector who needs to add that name to their collection and isn't fussy about condition, I'd peg it at about $25-35. If it was in better condition you could 2x that amount. Terry
Rusty_OToole Posted November 4, 2017 Posted November 4, 2017 Petroliana, the collecting of things related to the gas station and oil industry, is a popular hobby . They even have their own weekly paper. https://www.collectorsweekly.com/petroliana/overview
John_S_in_Penna Posted November 4, 2017 Posted November 4, 2017 Terry Bond (posting #5) is a knowledgeable collector of, it seems, everything connected to the automobile. His advice on pricing is therefore worth heeding. My perception is that people would want an oil can in better condition.
