javelinkid Posted September 24, 2017 Posted September 24, 2017 I have this photo of my Grandpa standing next to one of his cars. I have always loved this car but I am having trouble identifying it. I always thought it was about a '34 but my research has not come up with an exact match. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Leif Holmberg Posted September 24, 2017 Posted September 24, 2017 Plymouth 1934 PE De Luxe Sedan Leif in Sweden.
javelinkid Posted September 24, 2017 Author Posted September 24, 2017 Wow, thank you very much!! Somehow I missed Plymouth.
javelinkid Posted September 24, 2017 Author Posted September 24, 2017 Do you know what the PE stands for?
keiser31 Posted September 24, 2017 Posted September 24, 2017 8 minutes ago, javelinkid said: Do you know what the PE stands for? PE is the model designation. Different models had different features. For instance, the 1931 Dodge Brothers 6 cylinder car has the "DH" designation. the 8 cylinder in 1931 has the "DG" designation. They are simply progressive designation numbers used when ordering parts.
pont35cpe Posted September 24, 2017 Posted September 24, 2017 The PE had louvers and doors on the hood side panels, and the vent windows rolled down with the door windows..

javelinkid Posted September 24, 2017 Author Posted September 24, 2017 Thanks so much! I am really glad I found this site. Looking through everything it appears to be a vast wealth of knowledge here!
nzcarnerd Posted September 24, 2017 Posted September 24, 2017 1 hour ago, javelinkid said: Do you know what the PE stands for? The first Plymouths in 1928 were called the Q and the 1929 the U, and the 1930 the 30-U - no I don't know why - but the 1931 was the PA, the '32 the PB, the first '33s the PC but the cars looked too short so were redesigned mid season and became the PD, so for the 1934 cars PE came next. Low price PF and PG models also appeared in '34. For 1935 there was the PJ in three different versions and in 1936 the system changed again to numbers. 1936 P1 and low price P2 and so on.
42319DB34 Posted September 26, 2017 Posted September 26, 2017 Quite possibly , A Town Sedan , one of 891 produced in '34 Note : 1) trunk bulge 2) body line, below blind quarter has slight dip , same line on 4 door sedan ( with quarter window ) appears straight ( level )
Spinneyhill Posted September 26, 2017 Posted September 26, 2017 (edited) Interesting. Allpar.com (https://www.allpar.com/history/plymouth/1934.html) say 7,049 PE Town Sedans and 574 PFXX Town Sedans were made. We might need more information on this. Here is one from the rear (from www.ply33.com). The dip in the body line behind the rear door is clear. Edited September 26, 2017 by Spinneyhill (see edit history)
42319DB34 Posted September 26, 2017 Posted September 26, 2017 Don Butler , 1978 , Plymouth - DeSoto Story , page 69 The De Luxe Town Sedan ( PE as per javelinkid original post ) added in April , 7,049 Luxury models manufactured , 4 body colors offered , 891 in seven passenger configuration were built.
javelinkid Posted September 27, 2017 Author Posted September 27, 2017 I just love it! Hope to find one one day to restore. Makes you wonder how many could possibly be left. Thanks for all the input!
Dave Henderson Posted October 1, 2017 Posted October 1, 2017 I once saw in decades past a '34 Plymouth 2 door with a trunk, not an add-on, but made that way. The body was by Murray or Briggs, I can't sort out which at this late date. It was reminiscent of the also rare "34 Chevy 2 door with a built-in trunk. Does anyone else remember these? I
Spinneyhill Posted October 1, 2017 Posted October 1, 2017 The 1935 Studebaker Dictator also had a body style with the stuck-on bustle trunk like that.
