1928 president sedan

Recommended Posts

Hi all

I found a president the owner claims is a 28 serial number is 7000177. Not great shots it was stuffing in the back of a shed with no lights.

I would like to know what year it is and what model might it be?

are the brackets on the mat for a rear mount spare or for a trunk. Fender etc were in another shed that I didn't  get access to so not sure if it had sidemounts.

it is for sale but I'm not sure what it would be worth, the engine would not turn over by hand.

It is an FB President. The Standard Catalog says they built 13,186 of them between June and October 1928. Serial numbers start at 7000001 and seeing this is number 177 the casting date of May 1928 sounds right. The FB was the new for 1928 1/2 short wheelbase (121") version of the President and is the first model to have the bigger bore 337 cubic inch engine. As it is on wood wheels my guess is that it did not have sidemounts, but I notice it has a full width rear bumper so maybe it did have them. There is a pic of an FA wood wheel car with side mounts in the Crestline Studebaker book.  The FB is the model that was used to set the speed records at the Atlantic City speedway in July 1928.

It was built May of 1928 by the motor casting date.  H-5.  That rear bracket is for a trunk rack.

That would be the block casting date, rather than the car build date. Car was probably built a couple of months later at least.
