Jimblor Posted August 26, 2017 Posted August 26, 2017 (edited) Hi guys, Jim from Australia here. Looking to purchase a 1941 Buick sedanette. Any condition considered, project condition vehicles ok however minimal rust preferred, Prefer something mostly complete body wise but engine and gearbox missing doesn't matter (i've got a 263 straight eight here ready to go). must have a clear title. Contact me with whats out there? thanks guys.. Edited August 27, 2017 by Jimblor forgot to tag as wanted to buy (see edit history)
auburnseeker Posted August 26, 2017 Posted August 26, 2017 What is your price range for the car itself, realizing you will have a bit of an expense to actually get a car from the states to you?
Jimblor Posted August 26, 2017 Author Posted August 26, 2017 Price range would preferably be anywhere up to 10k USD, depending on the condition and location... In saying that, I would consider going higher for something that is in nicer condition. I have seen a lot of fairly decent project condition 41 sedanettes recently in the price range of 4 - 7k but the few decent candidates i have been interested in have not had titles, or the owner was not interested in selling to an overseas buyer. I should probably also mention that the seller would need to be willing to deal with an international buyer. I have purchased vehicles from the US before and the process can take a little longer than a usual sale.. In saying that, I do have an agent that can arrange for inspection, payment and pickup of any vehicle, anywhere in the USA, which makes things a bit easier. Thanks for your consideration..
auburnseeker Posted August 26, 2017 Posted August 26, 2017 I'll keep my eyes open. I just wanted to make sure you were realistic in your expectations before I threw a bunch of cars your way that were beyond your budget. Seems like a very realistic price range to me. I'll see what I can turn up. Probably West Coast would be better as shipping should be cheaper from there than the east coast.

I have shipping agent contacts on both coast's, but you are right - the west coast is the more convenient.
Ozstatman Posted August 31, 2017 Posted August 31, 2017 Jim, Are you aware of this? http://forums.aaca.org/topic/297099-big-brother-is-watching/
Dynaflash8 Posted August 31, 2017 Posted August 31, 2017 Orlando Classic Cars has what looks like, on line, to be a pretty nice 1941 Special sedanette. Go to their website and look it over. They are in Orlando, FL. I have never bought a car from these people, but I did sell them a car last year. Years ago we sold a 1935 Buick 40 to some guy, who, unknown to us at the time, was only going to flip it. He talked a good game. Orlando Classic Cars bought it at the Zephyr Hills Auction and later sold it to somebody in Spain. Long story short, my wife had made afghan seat covers for that car and we were kind enough to let that private buyer have them. When Orlando Classic Cars sold the car, they did not include the afghan. I found out later they had gotten and sold the car. I wrote and asked about the afghan. One of the two owners wrote back that he had it, and would return it to us free of charge, which he did. I've been partial to them ever since. A friend of mine suffered a debilitating stroke. He had a long string of Oldsmobiles and had to cut back. Orlando Classic Cars gave him a fair price for six of them, bought them outright, (not a commission deal) and then sold them around the world. So, I've determined over a period of years that these two guys are good guys and run a good dealership.

I have heard of the problems associated with the asbestos thing.. I've had a few mates bring in cars in the past month or so without problems and have also spoken with a couple of the local importers.. The story i'm getting is that the inspections are done at random and are mainly focused on brake and clutch... I was told that if you had these items removed in the USA and could provide a receipt for the work you can minimise the likelihood of being dragged through the coals.. (one of the importers i spoke with said they were able to arrange the works from their end for a reasonable price) I also figured that if it was possible to find a rolling car without engine and box you would only really have to have the brake pads/shoes removed and not be worried about things like gaskets etc..? Is a pain i know but what can you do? Don't suppose you know of any 41 2dr fastbacks for sale in Australia by any chance? Cheers.. Jim

Jim Sorry Jim, but no. All the best in your search. Also glad to hear the asbestos inspection problem is not as big a problem as I thought it to be.
Guest 60electra225 Posted September 4, 2017 Posted September 4, 2017 I know of two people that have recently brought cars in - one in Perth, the other in Sydney, The one in Sydney was allowed to remove the related asbestos parts, but was not allowed to bring anything other than hand tools in with him into the quarantine area. No spray, no power tools. Made it very difficult on a mid 1930's Mercedes with rusted bolts. Took him 2 days to remove all the parts required. The scenario in Perth was slight;y different. First, they wanted the car to go to an approved mechanic that could remove under supervision. Problem was that no one was certified to do this. They then allowed the owner to remove them, but rescinded this at the last minute and insisted on the approved mechanic - which didn't exist. After going backwards and forwards for about 2 months, they finally allowed the owner to remove the parts. I don't know that I will be importing anything again.
Dynaflash8 Posted September 4, 2017 Posted September 4, 2017 So, then, what do you do about the clutch and the brake shoes? This is all so ridiculous. Are a very few antique cars going to infect a whole population? These days everything is being taken to extreme by do-gooders. Where will it all end? 1
auburnseeker Posted September 4, 2017 Posted September 4, 2017 I couldn't believe that when I read it. There are no asbestos related parts already in Australia? Every car made there before the late 60's must have had or still has asbestos. Isn't it better to let stuff be than disturb it all. Is the dust from it being used really going to kill anyone? They aren't running along sniffing your brake drums or sticking their head in the clutch inspection hole. Especially on a car of early vintage which realistically will have very little use, compared to any other car. Just remember no matter what country you are in, it's your tax dollars hard at work.

Government bureaucrats are the same in every county, state, domain, commonwealth and most of every country. Can you expect less of them?

Its just a fair dinkum joke.. I think they didn't outlaw asbestos in automotive parts until around 2005 so there is probably millions of cars still out there getting about with it.. not to mention all of these cheap chinese bombs riddled with it.. (i heard "great wall" have been recalled because of it) .. I used to work in asbestos removal and the thing that really gets me going is that they have let millions of tonnes of cheap inferior Chinese building materials through the gate potentially exposing 10's of thousands of construction workers and public (after we've spent decades trying to safely remove it from our buildings) and yet they focus their efforts on a few old cars that pose minimal risk.... It's just bloody ridiculous.. Anyhow.. rant over and back to my original post.. Anybody know of any 41 sedanettes for sale?
