It sounds as if it was printed after competitors' cars, 

such as the Camaro, Firebird, and maybe the Mercury Cougar,

came out to challenge the Mustang's dominance.

The ad is for the 1968 model year. I didn't scan the ad but it looks like it is from a two page spread, which you can see here:
