The information that was published in the Meet Program Book was not "published for the public."  It was published for BCA members attending the meet.

 

I was looking at the 2017 BCA National Meet Program last night and was comparing it with the 2013 BCA Program Book (South Bend) and was happy that the 2017 issue did contain a lot more information about the members and what cars they brought to the meet.  The 2013 program only lists the names of who registered for the meet--no information on what car they entered.  This information is valuable to the club member who needs to contact a member who may or may not be able to help that inquiring member with info or help with his Buick.  "Who was the guy with the 1942 Special?"  That question can be easily figured out with the nice program provided by the BCA meet organizers. 

 

I'll take this time to thank all the folks who worked hard to make the meet a success.  Thank you.

It is often helpful to have the information in the program.  You might see a car like yours and the owner is not around, you could call them and talk about the car.

There was a Riviera in the car corral, and the alarm went off......the owner was not around and the horn was honking and running down the battery....someone called the owner and got it turned off.

Mr. Greg, I am having a really hard time following your logic here.  It sounds like you signed up to attend the national meet, rub elbows with like-minded Buick enthusiasts, check out the cars that are similar to what you have, make some new friends in the process, BUT, you don't want anyone to know anything about you or your cars.  That is pretty hard to swallow my friend.  Us Buick enthusiasts are a pretty great bunch of folks to be associated with.  We have members from all stations in life.  There are engineers, doctors, dentists, and even skilled metalworking people like myself.  It is true that there are crooks out there, but, the Buick enthusiasts that I know and associate with are a great bunch of helpful folks.  I'm going to give you some time-honored, free advice.  The best way to make and have friends is to act like one yourself.  You're not painting a very good picture of yourself on here - just sayin'.

Greg's concern is valid. I'm sure it wouldn't have been an issue if he was told what exactly his information was used for, but according to him this was not the case. All he's saying is that it's not fair for his information to be shared without his consent. They should have been more transparent on the issue. Like minded Buick enthusiasts or not, it is his opinion of the situation.

 

Also Greg is an upstanding citizen of the forum here, he's a welcome friend and his concern shouldn't reflect poorly on his character.

Maybe just including the BCA member number and details about the car would be a better approach.  Members could then refer to their BCA roster for contact information.

Sad truth is if you use a credit card, smart phone, or a computer you should not expect, and will receive, no measure of "privacy". The published Buick info is likely the least source of info in a vast dossier on all of us..............Bob

And Mr. Beck that is exactly why I don't have one of them 'dumb' phones.  I had one once for about four months and my wife caught me getting ready  to use a 5 pound sledge on it and reduce it to tiny little pieces.  The thing did not make me any smarter than I already am.

Credit card? Google? EBay? Amazon?  This very post likely has been noted and logged by some data base waiting to be mined by someone for their financial, or other gain. Might as well relax and enjoy the ride because it's not going away..........Bob

Greg, I see your point.  Perhaps we can add a check box to the future registration forms to indicate the registrant's desire to not be published in the program.  If left unchecked, we will publish it.  It has gotten to the point where you have to use a magnifying glass to read the registration form.  There is only so much room on a page, and to fit more on it means we have to make the print smaller.  But we will see if we can fit it in somewhere.

 

If we reversed it and had a checkbox to give us permission to publish it, I suspect a lot of people will overlook it and, therefore, we will not have many people listed in the program.  I think it is a valuable source of information, and it will probably be listed the same in future meets unless we are told by a higher authority to not publish it anymore.

Being a long time Buick Club member, I can assure you. once the marketeers make a few attempts to sell members their wares or exploit them, they will toss that list quite quickly.

I agree that Greg is an upstanding guy.  He has helped me and others immensely and any notion otherwise is a misrepresentation.  I would also point out that there is a big difference between having printed contact information made available and a personal meeting at the Buick events.  The former is uncontrolled, the later is controlled.  My personal preference would allow the publication of my contact information.  

 

I commend TxBuicks for his open ear and understanding as well.  You appear to have sound reasoning behind your accommodation on top of an attitude of accommodating; you are an asset to the organization - thanks!.

If the info was available in a digital document format then harvesting and exploiting would be easy.  Printed material not so easy to copy each individual piece of info.  Even OCR needs to be checked  line by line; and OCR can be confused by things like cursive script font and graphic background watermarks.  Google already has more info than in the program and targets individually...that's why everybody is not getting 'male enhancement' ads anymore.
