Dave B. Posted July 4, 2017 Posted July 4, 2017 I'm not much for cross-posting other people's cars, but this LaSalle was just too beautiful not to let the folks on the AACA forum know of the sale: http://bringatrailer.com/listing/1940-lasalle-5267-special-series-52-convertible-coupe/ 1
trimacar Posted July 4, 2017 Posted July 4, 2017 Beautiful car. From a trimmer's perspective, beautiful interior too, was it leather originally? Comments are fun on the posting, also, but the guy who says the early cars drive like "ox carts" is way off the mark, he's never driven a great original or well restored example of a late 30's car, they drive wonderfully.....IF done correctly... 1
auburnseeker Posted July 4, 2017 Posted July 4, 2017 I thought my 38 Cadillac sedan drove quite well and it was far from fresh, just not worn out. I drove it on the interstate at 70 with no problem. Even passed a minivan doing 50 on a back road on a passing stretch with no problem. They Were probably quite surprised to see that big black mass fly by them. If you are expecting one to handle like a new $120,000 Mercedes well then you may be disappointed.

I hate the Bring a trailer comments. So many guys who dont know squat about the cars their talking about but they spout off like their experts or something. How many sales of good cars are killed by one know nothing idiot trying to make it seem like hes an authority? I just cant shake the feeling of snottyness and superiority whenever I read those comments. I would never put my car on there and let those hacks swipe at it. Talk about killing the market!!!
alsancle Posted July 4, 2017 Posted July 4, 2017 The comment sections for both Barn Finds and Bring a Trailer are always a hoot. I was stupid enough to get dragged in to a battle over how how much money it takes to rebuild a Pierce 12. Basically their consensus was any decent mechanic could do one for not a lot of money. Oh boy they had no idea. 1
1912Staver Posted July 4, 2017 Posted July 4, 2017 I like Bring -a -trailer. You just have to overlook some of the comments. The basic concept is great, Interesting {for the most part} cars, condition variable, and their auctions are quite low cost to the seller compared to most other venues. A mix of "the bay" , craigslist and their own{ superior to Ebay IMHO } format auctions. Some of the comments are just as you say , but many others come from people with deep experience. And they deal with a lot of the cars that I am interested in , offbeat British, American, European, sports cars and GT's, the odd race car, and a smattering of interesting pre-war cars. Too many BMW's and Porsches for my taste, but that is a large part of the enthusiast market. Greg in Canada
John_S_in_Penna Posted July 4, 2017 Posted July 4, 2017 IS BRING-A-TRAILER ONLY AN AUCTION SITE now? It used to be a site where people would recommend interesting cars that seemed like good buys; where they would comment on them with a link to the sales site. However, when I go to their website now, I see only vehicles which they are auctioning. Am I missing the original part? And if so, how do I find that original format on their website?
Marty Roth Posted July 4, 2017 Posted July 4, 2017 When I first saw the LaSalle early this morning on Bring-A-Trailer (they send me an email every day), I was impressed with the apparent quality of the car - and David is right about the interior. I believe that they were leather originally, as were most quality open GM cars of the era. If I didn't already have my 1941 Cadillac cabriolet, and could live with the color (not my favorite as I prefer something more like what Buick called Sequoiah Cream), I might even have been tempted to bid. This site also seems to have a significant number of Citroen aficionados - myself included - and I know that my wife would welcome a D-Series Chapron convertible but they seem priced into unobtanium. These days I'd have to give up some special stuff to afford to buy back the SM 5-speed, the 2-CV, or the DS-21 Stationwagon I swapped to David so many years ago
