DmacL Posted June 8, 2017 Posted June 8, 2017 First post - I've been browsing and it seems I've found the right place to help. I've been asked to repair a 1930s Buick 8 which had a failed suspension component. Can anyone tell me what Buick would call the broken part; and where (if!) I could source a replacement? I'm in the UK but have contacts in the US who will ship to me. Also, are there enough details visible to give an accurate year for the car? The plate says 1933 1939. If replacement parts are not available I will be getting new ones manufactured, either investment cast or machined from scratch. Not cheap, but may be of interest to others. Thanks, DMacL.
critterpainter Posted June 8, 2017 Posted June 8, 2017 Well the car is a 1939, but I can't identify the series. Does the car use 5 bolts to hold the road wheel to the car (US built) or 6 bolts to hold the road wheel to the car( Canadian)?
MCHinson Posted June 8, 2017 Posted June 8, 2017 I am going to guess that this car is a 1939 Series 80 or 90. The part is identified by the Chassis Parts Manual as "SUPPORT, Steering Knuckle". The part manual diagrams appear to show that the 1939 40 and 60 Series Steering Knuckle Support looks different and is side specific. The part number for the 1939 Series 80 and 90 Steering Knuckle Support is Part number 1291652 for either side. It is used on 1936 Series 60-80-90 as well as the 1937, 1938, and 1939 Series 80 and Series 90. After typing my initial response, I see that the topic title lists the car as a Limited, which confirms the car being the large series as I suspected. I suspect that best source for this would be Dave Tacheny. The best way to contact Dave would be for you or your US based friend should call Dave between 4 and 7 pm Central at 763-427-3460.
1939_Buick Posted June 10, 2017 Posted June 10, 2017 (edited) Its a 1939 90L. Parts will be hard to find. May be the same as 1938 & 1940 series 90. When I get home will check my parts books Try Dave T http://forums.aaca.org/topic/206688-dave-tachney/ A few years there were some 1939 s80 or S90 is a USA wrecking yard in very poor condition There are some other 1938 & 1939 series 80 & 90 still in UK,ex Wilton (where this car may have come from) The other car in the photo is an Australian built 1939 Century series 61, that somehow has found its way to Scotland (Note the rear GM Holden side trim) I have had limited contact with the owner of these cars a few years ago Edit I see now see Matthew has identified the part numbers DmacL: sent you a private message Edited June 10, 2017 by 1939_Buick (see edit history)

MCHinson Posted June 10, 2017 Posted June 10, 2017 DmacL, I have edited your initial discussion title to indicate 1939 so hopefully might attract more attention from those who know more about 1939 Buicks.
DmacL Posted June 15, 2017 Author Posted June 15, 2017 Thank you all for your input. Have confirmed the car is definitely a series 90 1939; currently trying to get hold of Dave T as suggested. Would there be any other sources of parts worth contacting? I have a machine shop locally who are able to reproduce the part if I can't find an original; if there is demand I can have more than one made at the same time.
1939_Buick Posted June 15, 2017 Posted June 15, 2017 Quote The part number for the 1939 Series 80 and 90 Steering Knuckle Support is Part number 1291652 for either side. It is used on 1936 Series 60-80-90 as well as the 1937, 1938, and 1939 Series 80 and Series 90 Would not be a lot of demand, as both 1936 Series 60-80-90 and 1937 -1938- 1939 Series 80 and Series 90 are low production. It is a highly stressed part. Would need to use a good steel: Not just a generic mild steel if machined up. The machining cost would be in set up,,if done on NC machine tool. Be sure to ask Dave T about all models. Link to Dave T thread http://forums.aaca.org/topic/206688-dave-tachney/
