keninman Posted May 20, 2017 Posted May 20, 2017 This was on the Jack Benny fan page on Face Book. I thought "this looks safe". At any rate I don't think it looks like a Maxwell and certainly not the one that toured with Jack. Perhaps a model T touring.
Guest Posted May 20, 2017 Posted May 20, 2017 Certainly not a Ford Model T, way too big a car. That wooden stand is far stronger than any ordinary jack stands you can purchase at NAPA or Harbor Freight. It would hold the weight of the whole car.
nzcarnerd Posted May 21, 2017 Posted May 21, 2017 (edited) A later era but similar safety? - http://justacarguy.blogspot.co.nz/2017/05/ive-seen-some-sketchy-shadetree.html Edited May 21, 2017 by nzcarnerd (see edit history) 1
Curti Posted May 21, 2017 Posted May 21, 2017 I think Jack Benny is superimposed on that picture. The safety stand looks pretty stout to me. Overland maybe? 1
F&J Posted May 21, 2017 Posted May 21, 2017 That wheeled sled he is on, is like a cobblers bench, but far more useful.. It has an angled backrest geared to the angle of the car underside, a tool tray area. It's backrest is same angle as the safety support to get closer to it if needed
roysboystoys Posted May 21, 2017 Posted May 21, 2017 I've seen photos of that era where they work under them with just chain hoist holding the front of the car. That looks safe to me. Might get in the way.
lump Posted May 21, 2017 Posted May 21, 2017 Curti is right. We used to projects like this with an airbrush at my graphic arts company, years before computers and photoshop. Want proof? Look at Mr Benny's right sleeve, on left side of photo. You can sort of see right through it in places. Plus, the shading is all wrong. Cool photo. Now someone tell me what car it is, please.
nzcarnerd Posted May 21, 2017 Posted May 21, 2017 The pic of the mechanic working on the car was obviously taken in the early 1920s but the pic of Jack would date from somewhere either side of 1960. Can't find that one on Shorpy so maybe the addition of Jack was done quite recently? Haven't worked the car out yet but the hood length would suggest a light six from around 1920.
41 Su8 Posted May 22, 2017 Posted May 22, 2017 Possibly a Maxwell, Jack Benny always talked about his Maxwell.
Spinneyhill Posted May 24, 2017 Posted May 24, 2017 It looks a lot safer than some I have seen, where the car is just supported on a couple of planks.
30DodgePanel Posted May 25, 2017 Posted May 25, 2017 (edited) http://www.shorpy.com/node/18579?size=_original Studebaker God I love that old photography..... The detail, lighting and setting are incredible Edited May 25, 2017 by 30DodgePanel (see edit history)
Spinneyhill Posted May 25, 2017 Posted May 25, 2017 The photography is xclnt. What about the oil slick on the floor? When he tries to stand up he will be flat on his back in the twinkling of an eye.
