Guest jgmartin
Did Olds make a cutlass convertable "S" in 1970. We have a '70 conv. and there are holes for a badge under the "Cutlass" script on the front fenders. Two vertical holes . The only badge I find that line up are "S" badges. It is a 350, conv't, bucket seats, sport steering wheel, console, auto floor shift. Was "S" a performance or appearance pkg?
West Peterson
I'm pretty sure it was appearance only, as my brother owns a Cutlass S with a six-cylinder in it.

In the 1970-72 model years, the only Cutlass convertible was badged as a Cutlass Supreme. The VIN will start 342670... For 1970-71 model years, the only other Olds A-body convertible was the 442, but the body was identical to that of the Cutlass Supreme convert. Keep in mind that any 1970-72 Cutlass/F-85/Vista Cruiser front end will bolt up to this car, so unless you have complete history on the car since it was born, you don't know if parts were changed. Doug Novak
Wikipedia also has pictures of them, I'm not sure what the difference was between the "S" and the "Sipreme? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oldsmobile_Cutlass The Oldsmobile Cutlass is a line of automobiles produced by Oldsmobile between 1961 and ... 1971 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme Convertible ..... The 1970 Cutlass was available in seven body styles: the base F-85 two-door sedan, .... The S and Supreme both have a chrome strip atop the bonnet, while the Supreme also ... Mark Shaw
My friend just bought a 1969 Cutlass S Convertible with a 350 engine.

What does that have to do with a question about a 1970? Olds changed the model designations, availability, and styling from 1969 to 1970.
Mark Shaw
Jeeze Joe, I didn't mean to upset you. You obviously know more than I.... In reference to West Petersen's post, I was just indicating that the Cutlass S was also available with a 350 engine in 1969.
West Peterson
Mark. That was the most common engine. Very, very rare to find one with the six-cylinder still in it. My brother's is a 1968, and I think the number of Sixes was around 400 total. The reason I posted that was because of the question of weather the "S" was a performance option or a trim option. My brother's "Six" is an "S" also.

My brother's "Six" is an "S" also. The Cutlass S was simply a model designation created by the marketing department. The "S" did not mean "sport", contrary to what you may read on the web. Of course, it is still unrelated to a 1970 Cutlass convertible, since all 1970 Cutlass convertibles were Supremes.
JustDave
in 1970 olds made 3 convertibles the cutlass, sx convertble and of course the 442 convertible, the sx and the 442 both the 442 and sx had big block 455s, the cutlass s was a holiday hardtop different body than the cutlass convert, they made cutlass s, cutlass w31s and 442s in the s or holiday body style but no convertibles,i would say if the fenders have holes its likely the fenders where changed or someone made holes,if you look at the inner structure of the fender the lower portion under the hinge will have ripples, the 71 and 72 did not,but all 3 years the fenders where interchangeable, dave

Yes, and I'm so jealous, what an interesting car....if he ever wants to sell it, please give him my name! My first brand new car (high school graduation present from my folks) was a '69 Cutlass, and I think it was the cleanest design, the light placement on a '68 (to me) is a little awkward looking, and a '70 (to me) looks chunkier, although I once owned a '72 442 convertible that was quite a car.... The SX was simply an option package on the Supreme and carried exactly the same 342670... VIN as any other Supreme convert that year. The 442 had a 344670... VIN.
