Chavis garage

Recommended Posts

Not much has happened over the last week and a half.  Final trimout of the electrical work was completed.  Still waiting on the power company to run their line to the meter.20200916_150134.thumb.jpg.f08f28144512b037aab67c796e0aff4d.jpg20200916_150235.thumb.jpg.3c11e7c0269481160e989ac1b93e3cbf.jpg20200916_150251.thumb.jpg.9cc7d253aba9a653df90ffb00ac065c8.jpgAlso, started moving things into the new garage...which means finally saying goodbye to the good old carport.  20200919_145142.thumb.jpg.2449ae805990b77ae519f9f77607ff69.jpg20200919_164100.thumb.jpg.7525bc53a938cdac3a578a682f6fa6e0.jpgIt served it's purpose and I am glad that I had it, but I am not sad to see it go.

Lookin' good Kosage!  So, did the utility company or city make you run a dedicated service to the garage as opposed to adding a sub-panel from the house, or was the house service maxed-out?

Our house service is maxed out.  Either way, I think we would have went with the option of the garage having it's own service anyway.

Over the weekend, I cleaned and organized the new garage as best I could.  I can't really work in here like I want to until I have a work bench.  So, that's what I started to work on.  Removed the old work bench from the other garage.20201003_135900.thumb.jpg.a3179236cf3261f0e9284ae35e86c70a.jpgThen, started putting together the structural part of the new work bench.  20201012_162822.thumb.jpg.85a088ca884cfa601f4a74816383d5fe.jpgI don't have a table saw and I really don't want to spend hundreds of dollars to buy one.  So, I made one with a regular circular saw and scrap wood!20201012_162830.thumb.jpg.9a6d4b813f9b31be524900b536375f52.jpg20201012_183948.thumb.jpg.8996b2c58008443f297498acfd9d5bbb.jpg20201012_183958.thumb.jpg.e12455785fc4c1a0b7e1b2131cceb27f.jpgAll I need to do now is make a decent fence for it and I can finish one of my work benches.

Build the fence for the table saw today.20201014_173638.thumb.jpg.43903fd114f907ece8902b25e10d4820.jpg  @JFranklin, also made a pair of these to keep my fingers away from the blade.20201014_174656.thumb.jpg.c20fe77c38475ec936638623e17859b5.jpgOut of all of the tools I have ever operated, the table saw is what I fear most.  Got to respect it.  I cut my first piece with no issue.  20201014_173627.thumb.jpg.43305ae3a33fedfb5def344605927daa.jpgWent ahead and cut a few more pieces for the bottom portion of my work bench.  The cuts look good.  Now, to finish this work bench this weekend!

Phase 1 of the work bench is done.  This is my stationary work bench.  I still need to put my vice onto it.20201018_171223.thumb.jpg.455c672eaa6a2fb88020de4216d7379b.jpgI will also add a fold-down portion on the end to extend my work space if needed.  It will also allow for more floor space when I need that more.  On the other side of the garage, I will build another work bench with a fold-up portion.  I want this work bench to be multifaceted.  The idea is when needed and both folding portions are in place on both work benches, I will have work bench space along the entire length of the backside of the garage.  The other work bench will be a roller that can also fold down entirely on the wall.

In the meantime, I need to build a set of small shelves to hold both bumpers from my Buick.  That way, I can finally move both Buicks in the shop.

I see you have multiple outlets at the bench - that's a good thing!  I'd also suggest that you consider anchoring the bench top with a couple of lag bolts into the studs.  You 'll be glad when hack-sawing or leaning hard on that stuck bumper bracket bolt (or whatever) clamped in the vise.  ;)

Good to hear from you @EmTee.  I already took care of this.  3 at the top and 3 at the bottom.

OK, now I'm jealous!  Next, you need to have an 8x10 picture of yourself done-up in a nice frame.  Place it on the fireplace mantle, coffee table, or other appropriate spot in the house so that your wife and kids will remember what you look like...  ;)

A small update to the garage.  Lighting is one of a few things that needs improvement.  Exterior lighting would be easiest.  So, I did that first.  20210830_173029.jpg.1eaa8ad006a85017cff389f4cb43a9bd.jpgRan wire and boxes.  Also switched out a single switch for a double to operate lights at both doors independently.20210902_210921.jpg.6b761876627212abf7daea8b917cc454.jpgLights are now functional and they even look nice for the main garage door.20210902_210510.jpg.48edcd80817f03f3b28c06ed6692e21e.jpgI also switched to a matching light at the smaller garage door. 20210901_180725.jpg.46c918cddbc155e9140395e91a05bc08.jpgThat is all for now.

I purchased a window heat pump from Walmart (online) did not want to obstruct a window,so cut a hole in the wall.

Think it is about 17,000 btu and it does a good job of both heating and cooling.   Dont recall the price but it was maybe $600

Neighbor did a inside/outside unit because he has more sq ft   I am only HVAC part of my shop, about 750 sq ft

Kosage, I just jumped in today and read through this.  Nice project!  I love to see these garage builds.  I hope to do one when I retire and there are so many good ideas seeing what other guys have done.  Keep us updated even if it is little things.
