JRHaelig
So I've been soaking my gearbox in an acetone/ATF mix for about 2 weeks and the center sliding spline still won't budge. I can't get any 2nd & 3rd gear motion. It might be time to think about surrender and replacement. Begs the question - how available are these boxes? How often do they come up for sale? What price range would a decent non-rebuilt unit be in? I've learned that this is a 1 year box, and there are fewer 5-bolt lids than 6-bolt lids to start with... What else don't I know? Many thanks......
39BuickEight
They are on eBay rather regularly, both entire units and individual gears. Here is one now, and there are more in various condition if you search: http://m.ebay.com/itm/1939-Buick-Transmission-40-Series-1310010-/122341259143?hash=item1c7c1b7787%3Ag%3AAI8AAOSwFe5X1yLu&_trkparms=pageci%3A913602ad-f004-11e6-ab74-74dbd1806df4%7Cparentrq%3A2b125f7315a0a2af569818a9fffbb057%7Ciid%3A6
1939_Buick
Some internal parts are common with other years. But many are 1 year only. Syncro's (1 year only) are particularly hard to get. I have a excel xls spreadsheet that lists all the parts by year for before/after 1939 (a few years each side). 1939 is known as a weak transmission. One person, who posts on the forum, has converted/modified a 1940 transmission to fit his 1939 series 40. A tremendous amount of work that needed a lot of technical skill. 1940-54 series 40 are basically the same (did not change much). 1939 series 40 transmission do come up on ebay from time to time. Every 1939 series 40 owner should have a spare transmission & differential Bob H had some 1939 series 40 parts cars at one time Late 1930's, 1940's & early 1950's straight 8 series 40 (248ci) transmissions have a 5 bolt cover. Late 1930's, 1940's & early 1950's straight 8 series 60-80-90 (320ci) transmissions have a 6 bolt cover Many more series 40 were made than series 60-80-90.
