37 Buick Special
I am sure everyone knows what this is but I am new to old Buicks. It is stamped right on the item, "Fast Idle" so I assume it is some sort of gismo that adjusts the idle. Can anyone tell me what it is called and how is it adjusted? It mounts in the large hole shown on the intake manifold. Any help is much appreciated. pont35cpe
That item is your starter switch...
pont35cpe
A shop manual will give you a step by step procedure for correct adjustment, which includes the accelerator pedal, carburetor, and the starter switch..
LAS VEGAS DAVE
This is much different than my 38 starter switch. Is this from a 37?
37 Buick Special
Thank you gentlemen, much appreciated. Starter switch. Great. Have an original 37 shop manual but haven't looked real closely all the way through it. I will do that. Just found it. Yes it is from a pretty much all original 37 Special. Thanks again! dibarlaw
With the carb and all the linkages set up properly and that the switch is functioning properly the accelerator switch works fine. The throttle knob on the dash will assist in starting if you get stuck on a hill. I have friends that have high dollar restorations on some of their Buicks of this vintage and did remote hidden switches and disabled the original accelerator /vacuum switch because they did not trust it. They may drive their car less that 100 miles a year. I have driven mine over 8,000 miles since 2013 and never had a problem with the set up.. But I do have a rebuilt switch just in case.
