Jim Milewski
Sorry fellow members, posted under technical when I should've posted under ROA - looking for guidance in installing 1965 Riviera clam shell assist springs
Schmiddy
Hi Jim I don't know exactly what you expected 'cos your question is a bit vague... So if you need guidance for Riviera clam shell, possibly this could help:http://www.ebay.ch/itm/1965-Buick-Clamshell-Headlight-Shop-Manual-Riviera-Repair-Service-Clam-Shell-/361569558662?hash=item542f39a086 I have this book and it is very helpful! If you need a specific hint, I can scan you the appropriate pages...
Jim Milewski
Thanks for the link - I have a 1965 Riv with the clam shell lights, I learned that 1965 was the only year that the assist springs were added to assist in the closing, I have a pair and do know that they attach to each side of the fender (or bracket0 and then to the clam shell - this is my problem - I don't know the exact location - I will probably order the book Thanks Schmiddy Jim
RIVNIK
Hopefully the $24,00 Ebay listing is a typo!
RivNut
In Germany, a comma is used instead of a decimal when writing currencies. It's $24.00 in US Dollars
Schmiddy
5 hours ago, RIVNIK said: Hopefully the $24,00 Ebay listing is a typo! Ed is absolutely right, I didn't had in mind that the listing would be shown that way for you guys in the US ... The ebay link is with .ch as top level domain. Just change it to .com and it should be shown the right way .ch is the swiss top level domain, why also the swiss curency CHF is show below the US amount. So here the correct link:http://www.ebay.com/itm/1965-Buick-Clamshell-Headlight-Shop-Manual-Riviera-Repair-Service-Clam-Shell-/361569558662?hash=item542f39a086 @Jim: You're welcome! I think the invest in this book is a good thing... I didn't had any issues with my calm shells so far, but if one day something should happen, I'm armed! kdml
Not the best picture, but this is a picture from the drivers side of my '65 during disassembly. Is this the spring you are referring to? It is on the left side of the clamshell about mid way down. Jim Milewski
Yes sir - it assists with closing from what I have read and 1965 was the only year they had it - did send for the book that Schmiddy
Jim Milewski
Just received the 1965 Riviera clam shell manual - glad I have it but it doesn't show me anything about the assist springs - oh well
Schmiddy
Hi Jim Hm, I could swear that they had a figure with this spring on the clam shell frame... The only figure I could find in the manual is Fig. 19, but it doesn't show exactly where the springs are fixed. (I'm sorry for that! ). Eventually you could contact Larry Daisey a.k.a. "The Riviera man" at Rancho Riviera in Yucca, AZ. http://www.rivparts.com/meet-larry.html Larry is an absolute Riviera specialist and usually sells 1st & 2nd generation Riviera parts. He always loves to talk about Rivieras in general... (don't know him personal but a lot of people say that!) If no other alternatives, call him! kdml
I did not properly label this last picture, but I am guessing that I was trying to show myself where the spring attaches to the clamshell. Maybe someone who's car is together can confirm.
Schmiddy
Nice material Dough... I just went into my garage to see, how the spring is fixed.... but well, there is a mounted plate in front of it and I'wasn't really in the mood to remove it (I've minus 8°C in the garage at the moment). Maybe somebody out there has it already removed?

RIVNIK
I have the same problem... Unfortunately, 1st thing I did after reading this thread was order the manual! Oh well, it will be a good thing to have I suppose. . thanks for the pics. 1st chance I get I'll get out there & see if they help. Of course I'll have to wait till it cools off a bit. These Fla. winters can be grueling! Eat your hearts out Yankees! (sorry, I couldn't help myself) Drew BTW: you're all welcome to come on down. (you know you will, eventually.) Ill be glad to put you up in my shed while you look for a place.
Schmiddy
I think, to have such a manual is never a bad thing! You're never know when something break or doesn't work any more the way it should... It's just a petty that the specific problem with the spring fixing isn't explain or documented on it Well... In spring I will change all 4 lamps and I guess, I will have to remove the front plate first. I will make some pics of the inside and how the springs are fixed. I promise to post them here in the thread

RIVNIK
Hey Shmiddy ! Just received my clamshell manual & it is a thing of beauty. I can't believe I've pondered over clamshell problems and asked 100 questions of experts for twenty years, & finally had to be schooled from Switzerland ! Every Riv owner should have one of these. Aside from the glaring return spring omission, it is an in-depth, comprehensive manual which covers everything you need to know (almost). There can't be many of these out there....Get yours today! Schmiddy
Hi Drew Glad to hear that and I'm happy that you're fine with it! Sure, I think too, every owner with clamshell Riviera should have that manual as part of the standard service manual.
whitewatersky
ahhhhh - this is scaring me for my 65 Resto hasn't been driven for 15 months.... not that I have problems (had?) with my clamshells, but all the little model specific details once we dig into the work ... yikes ! can't wait to drive her again Edited January 29, 2017 by whitewatersky (see edit history)
