Hudsy Wudsy
Here's a link to a C/L ad I just came across for a '37 Desoto 4dr for sale in Colorado Springs. Judging by the height of the front end in the pics, I'm guessing that the original engine Is gone. It looks to have great sheet metal, bumpers and grille. As such, it may be a very nice parts car, if nothing else, for $1,600: http://denver.craigslist.org/cto/5935358179.html Edited December 29, 2016 by Hudsy Wudsy (see edit history)
JACK M
Those bumpers will bring a good price and there are people always looking for those tail light lenses. I wonder if the winged lady that holds the hood shut is still there.
Hudsy Wudsy
I always admired the straight sweeping lines of the grille on these. This is an opportunity to see a great deco design without the necessary, but very distracting, headlights. It's a little like a Studebaker of the same era.
Hudsy Wudsy
I've complained about this before, and been rebuked for doing so, but far too many times I see nice enough old cars fall into the hands of hopeless dreamers who have only the vaguest ideas of building some kind of street rod. It invariably starts with removing the driveline and then the seats and usually disposing of them. It's only then after months and, more often, years of alternately pondering and ignoring the car that they finally realize that they don't have the skills to plan, let alone complete the project, and that they can't afford to have someone else do it for them. When I post these little gems like this onto our forums, I do so optimistically, I'll admit, thinking that someone might have an interest in them because they just so happen to have a decent missing component lying around looking for a home. Of course, there's also the possibility that someone might find buying the whole car for parts a great alternative also. I'll mention something else here that is probably good for guys to know--sometimes when cars sit in this state for periods of time they become embarrassing reminders that the owner started yet one more thing and then didn't finish it. Also, they become eyesores that other members (wives, of course) are sick of seeing. While the majority end up being sold on C/L and local newspapers. Whether out of embarrassment or discouragement, however, a percentage of them get discreetly hauled away to good old fashion junk yards because the owner just wants them gone. I think that most guys just don't realize that the junk yards that offer parts for vintage cars get a slow steady stream of cars just like this one. When I go to Windy Hills or French Lake here in MN, I always see vintage cars that weren't there before. If I had a desire to own this Desoto the first place I'd call looking for headlights would be one of our nation's numerous specialty junkyards. Unlike individuals, the yards have a better and more realistic idea of what vintage parts are worth. A private party will often think that the part that he is offering is "gold" and you'll never find another one anywhere.
