Guest
I have a 1984 Cutlass Supreme with a 3.8 carbureted engine and 82,000 miles.
The car has been well maintained and just passed its smog test with flying colors,
But the “Check Engine” light has started to come on several times a day now. The fuel
Mileage, while never wonderful has dropped 5 miles per gallon? The owners manual only says that when the light appears, something is wrong with the emission computer and bring the car into the dealer. Before I do, does anyone know what might be the source of
this problem?
Thanks
Rick
another old car
Rick
go to auto parts store and get a repair book
you will learn that it will tell you how to read onboard computer - I test system on older 80's GMtrucks with a paper clip and write down whatever numbers - the flashing check engine light - Shows me - then look them up in trouble codes
Really its very simple
Steve Moskowitz
Annnnd, the Number 1 problem we find is loose gas caps! Will set the light off in a heartbeat (although his gas mileage problem sounds strange and he does not mention any other rough running condition)! Guest
I can't seem to predict when the light will appear. Yesterday, I drove 25 miles to work and the light appeared 5 times, but nothing, not even once on the way home? I first saw it while the car was idling for my smog test. The car passed with good results, but I plan to drive the car a lot this summer and need to fix it.
Rick
