71 Rear Axle End Play

Hi Guys,

I got whitewalls put on my tires yesterday. They're mounted to 17x8 Torque Thrust.

I noticed while the back wheels were jacked up there is end play in the shafts. The whole brake drum and wheel move in and out maybe 1/16" on both sides.

I can't see any way to adjust this out in the workshop manual. Does it mean the bearings have not been installed correctly?

Tony,

Check the thickness of the gasket used between the backing plate and axle. Originals were very thin. Sounds like the outer race has room to move back and forth in the housing. Either that or the bearings ability to prevent thrust movement has failed. Also possible the bearing that was installed had a slightly narrower outer width.

From my experience, that's pretty normal and I've seen even a bit more 'slop' without issue. I've got a '66 225 where you can hear the clunk on a quick tail wag-no problem in 20 years. Tony, is that the Rivboat you had at Flagstaff in '06?-looks a lot nicer now!   Dan    Mpls. Mn.
