CADILLAC 1926 RADIATOR TANKS

Recommended Posts

I have just looked at the top and bottom tanks of one of my 314C cars, to see what you are up against.   The history is that I rebuilt my 314 B 4 passenger phaeton under a wattle tree in the family backyard in 1960-61, and used it for several years as my first car, and had no other then.  For various reasons a friend helped me change to the better core of the 314C.   As you doubtless know, but an author of an excellent Cadillac did not know then, there were three distinct series of 314, with significant differences.

314C had the hose connection to the water pump  on the opposite side to the earlier series, but top and bottom tanks are probably otherwise the same.   Making new tanks would be an expensive fiddle if you needed someone to do it for you, because of all the internal fittings.  But unless someone has carelessly dissolved most of the zinc from the metal structure of the brass sheet .  Without cleaning the tank material it appears to be about 20 gauge, or thirty thou thick.  If you need to patch you should be able to do so with sections of new brass sheet.  My personal preference is to use one of the lower melting point silver brazing alloy filler rod, which will have a fairly high silver content and good capilliary flow.  In this sort of work for my own needs I prefer to make steel jig-work so the result is an accurate fit to the core. I made patterns and cut brass in sections fpr radiators that  were missing from John Hancox' Series Six  Mercer, and mine.  John had no difficulty building new top and bottom tanks to fit his new core.  And I made a new bottom tank for him to take to NJ several years ago to replace the original for 22 gauge which was ruined by caustic soda used to clean it.  The bottom tank for 314 would be very difficult to make because of the pressed ribbing underneath.  Today we are fortunate that we can clean stuff like this economically by glass bead blasting.  The ease of silver brazing and soldering is dependant on absolute cleanliness.  I am sorry I am too far away to give you practical help.  ( I have always had ambition to visit Canada and see the site of the battle for Quebec).

My rad while close is not an exact match. As Ivan Saxton pointed out there is a differing orientation of the lower outlet depending on which model of 314 . Mine must be from a different model 314 as the lower outlet faces the wrong direction. My top tank has a Harrison Rad. tag bearing the numbers 236C - 1926. The top tank looks the same but the bottom has some differences.
