Read my post by clicking the link.

Look at the transmission  and see if it is laying on its side.

Column shift indicates T86 , but I am not sure.

Will look at parts books tomorrow. Someone more familiar may chime in.

Do you have an overdrive already? Roll under the car and see what is cast into the case (i.e. raised letters).

Column shift is the later version. Early shifters were in the floor (std shift).

Easier still....The Hollander 1952 says the '39 Com. & Pres. with overdrive & steering post shift used a T88-1F. The '39-40 Graham used the same box with a different main drive gear.

In fact it says all '39 Com. gearboxes were T88: T88-1 for not o/d (early version, same as the '38 pass. & CE w/o o/d), T88-1H for o/d w. std shift, T88-1E for not o/d w. steering post shift. Thus they all "lie on their side". All '38 pass. & CE w. o/d used a T88-1A. This gearbox had no o/d kick-down capacity, just centrifugal shifting.

If the one you have is giving problems, it might be easier to fix it. I am no mechanic and I managed to do it: they are not very complicated.

Thanks for the additional info.

From what I understand is that the T88 suffered from lubrication problems and the T86 was installed on late 1939 Commanders.

I am not an expert on these and invite comments.

In 1938 there was an optional vacuum shifter that was not offered in 1939.
