REAR MAIN SEAL

The rear main seal I got in the box today from a popular Vendor is in an envelope marked Best Gasket "5146, Cadillac V8 351-365 1949-58 Early and Packard V8." Also marked on the envelope is Fel-Pro BS 5974.

1956 Packard front shocks are different ("T" bottom) than 1951-55 ("stud" bottom).

Unconfirmed: standard piston rings for all 1956 Packard Senior series cars, including the Caribbean. These are Grant # 2187 STD. You should check to make sure these are correct for your car as I am relying on information provided by others that these fit 56 Senior V8's.

I have edited this posting with.....The ebay posting shows a T-type end one on end and IF they would work on a Packard, it would be '56 FRONT only! But there seems to be some doubt, so I may have to delete this post if the general consensus is they will not work on the Packards.

REAR SHOCKS, with torsion bar, unconfimred from ebay (they do have the T-fitting and if true they fit '55-57 Chevy, then you can find them just about ANYWHERE ANYTIME):

2 NEW OLD STOCK REAR SHOCKS. THEY ARE MADE BY WIZARD, WHICH WERE SOLD BY WESTERN AUTO STORES. THE PART NUMBER IS #S-4213.

Randy, yes, I should have elaborated. The shocks are listed as "rear shocks" on ebay. The photo does show T-fitting on one end, so presumbably then these would fit the FRONT of the Packards.

26830. The name on the race is BOWER but I believe it is still Timken

manufacture.

McQuay Norris FA-013, fits a lot of stuff, it is the inner lower control shaft assm. for 1949-51 Mercury, 1951-56 Packard and 1941-60 Cadillac, book says it fits em all, rubber bushings.

He notes that the COMPOSITE head gaskets for the V8's is 0.045 inch thick. I've not measured an original yet. He has an EXCELLENT eBay rating. eBay ID is 'gordy-stick'.

I ordered a V8 pan gasket set from him.

It's 1973. My Dad and I owned a franchise back then. It has Western Auto stock numbers which I have no idea if they are still valid. I figure if the same number is listed for more than the Packard it is helpful. If you go to a parts place looking for a generator and they say "we don't have Packards listed." They may have 52-56 Pontiac or 55-56 Buick listed which is equal, for example.

From ebay:

Ultramatic high range clutch plates. They are ... correct for 1950 through 1956 Packards and Studebaker 56J Golden Hawks with Ultramatic. These are the later style plates that were made available in 1958 presumably to correct a deficiency in the earlier type. For that reason, they have a different part number which is 1548882. (The original number was 421128.)

I recently purchased a spare Torsion-Level Compensator Gearbox and on inspection found that the wormgear shaft end Bearing, was bad. To my surprise I found that it is a metric size bearing #629. (9mm I.D., 26mm O.D. and 8mm width) It is a common size and can be purchased many placed.

To inspect and replace this bearing a 1 1/8" plug type cap must be removed from housing and the bearing is held in by a clip ring. There was no grease under the cap and it should be full to protect bearing. The plug is very hard to remove without damage to plug, unless you remove the motor and shaft and using a long 1/4" rod to knock it out. So I punched a hole in the center of it, prized it out, and filled the hole with epoxy before reinstalling it. That way the cap can be removed and grease inspected, while mounted in car, without removing the motor and shaft.
