straight8pontiac
I would like to remove the wiper transmission from the drivers side on my '37 Pontiac for rebuilding purposes. Looking up under the dash I find that the chain which drives the wiper is off. I can also remove the drive arm which goes to the the wiper motor from the transmission. My question- at this point how do I remove the transmission from the cowl? This unit really appears to be stuck (fastened) in place. Thanks for any help to get me started- Dave
DonMicheletti
There is a "U" shaped clamp that holds the transmission in. It can be seen in the upper right part of this photo. It is held in by one bolt. Usually the old rubber gasket between the cowel and tower is stuck and has to be broken loose.
straight8pontiac
Don, By looking up under the dash I can see this clamp. It does come off easily. I'm hesitant to pry or force the unit for fear of breaking. I'll be working at it quite gingerly. Thanks again- Dave
DonMicheletti
The tower is pretty tough and the gasket can be pretty stuck. About the only real liability, depending on the paint, removal of the tower might take some paint off. The rubber gaskets on mine were like rock when got them off
straight8pontiac
Don, Thanks so much for your advice and encouragement- I was able to remove the tower by carefully working a putty knife under all of its edges to loose it from the gasket. I then was able to complete a repair that was necessary and reassemble with a gasket sealant. The most difficult part of the job was to re-attach the chains which drive the wiper. The entire job was successful and I now have both wipers working as they should. Thanks again- Dave
DonMicheletti
For what it is worth, Steele Rubber has the correct molded gasket for the towers. However, years ago, on one of my cars, I cut a gasket from an old inner tube and that has worked well and no one has ever noticed.
