Help me date this photo!

Recommended Posts

Can anyone help me try and date this photo?

I'm working on a historic home project and this is the only photo of the house... which I know was built in 1915. Can anyone help me guesstimate the year of the photo based on the car and truck in the image?

I would be super appreciative of any help and thank you in advance!

The car looks like a 1949 Mercury. The Dodge Power Wagon could be the same.

The Powerwagon looks like a surplus WWII ambulance.  I agree w/ Keiser '49 Merc.  Since the hubcap is missing, I would give the car 2-3 year of age at least, since a new car owner would never be seen missing a hubcap.  It could be a smudge, but there may be a TV aerial to the slight left of the pitch of the top of the roof, so that would probably date it early-mid '50s.  I'd guess 1953.

I could not tell the '49-'50 Mercurys apart from the side, either. I suppose it could be a '50.

Thank you for all of the input!

There is not a TV antennae on the roof of the house -- that's a smudge. I found the photo in a packed basement and it has some water damage (the photo, not the basement).

I appreciate the help!

Yes, there is a TV antenna just to the left of the peak of the dormer, above the open window.

It looks like a Chanel Master antenna, they came with a control to turn the TV ant. from the living room to get a stronger signal.

I would guess the photo was taken around 1955 or a bit later.

It is a long horizontal bar with sort  bars perpendicular bars on a pole that mounts to the roof. I have put up some and taken down many of these.

You'd have to use an older version of Google Earth to see the house as the picture shows. Wouldn't you?

You never know. A LOT of places still look the same.

It's a smudge and a wrinkle, not an antenna... I swear.

I vote for it's an antenna.  I also have put up a number of them in the day.

The other house, right side of the photo, seems to have a vertical line by it also...maybe another antenna?

Can you say it's not a 50 Merc?

The pushbutton door handles makes me agree that its a '50.

Besides the push button handles. the 50 Merc has a different trunk ornament. This can be seen in the subject pic

The Ambulance is a Dodge Military 1/2 ton WC-9, 18 or 27 depending on the series.  Built between very late 1940 to April of 1942.
