gas tank vacuum

2 Years ago , I had to drop the tank on my '41 Continental to clean out the tank. I also replaced the sender gasket. On my first

test drive . the car kept stalling out. It was when I loosened the (aftermarket ) gas cap that I felt the vacuum created from a sealed

system. After I drilled a tiny vent hole in the cap  all was well.

Mike, checked  the fill pipe on my '38  and my '38 spare tank and these tanks have a  3/8"  pipe running down the inside and also a small  pipe about 3" installed just below the

fill cap. This vents right to the outside. Now on my '48 the fill pipe is a different design altogether, no inside vent pipe , just a plain fill pipe with a rubber sleeve  connecting

the pipe to the tank neck. The gas cap is stainless steel, plain ; with a knurled edge.   BUT!  inside there is a small ( 1/8"?) hole drilled through the locking piece BUT not through

the stainless body of the cap. This the vent. I think this the original  cap.--- Larry
