As you probably know, California has its own environmental regulations which substantially exceed Federal requirements, and there are fewer and fewer platers here.  You mentioned pot metal, and that requires painstaking work and a patient, very careful grinder. Depending on the number and depth of pits in each piece, there may be multiple copper platings and dressings.   Sherms is worth it to me for pot metal and for parts with a lot of detail which would be ground out at most production shops.
