Guest GaWajn
I have an Oldsmobile service manual (1953) that states to use the tool J-720 for a certain job on the front suspension. A google search shows that it it is used in earlier manuals also, but shows no photos or descriptions. Does anyone have a picture of this tool, or knowledge of what this tool is and it's intended use? Any help is appreciated.
46 woodie
It is used to adjust caster. "To adjust caster, loosen clamp bolt in upper end of knuckle support. Remove lubricating fitting on front bushing of upper support pivot pin. Insert allen wrench, PN J-720 into lubricating fitting hole and turn to adjust caster". Hope this helps. Phillip Cole
Do a search under Restored Cars Classifieds. There are a couple of PDFs there that describe the process. Sorry, cannot find a picture.
Phillip Cole
Found it: The Old Cars Project has a 1940 Olds Manual that shows a picture with J720 making the adjustment. Looks like a plain Allen wrench to me... Edited July 20, 2016 by Phillip Cole Update (see edit history)
46 woodie
Yup, just an ordinary allen wrench. Probably a couple of bucks in a hardware store but a "J720 Caster Adjustment Tool" is $50 at your local Olds dealer, when they were still around, that is.
