packick
On a lot of cars there is a metal ring that goes (crushes) between the manifold and the exhaust pipe.. One side of this ring looks like it has asbestos embedded in it. Does the asbestos side got towards the manifold or the exhaust pipe? Or does it really matter? MrEarl
I think John meant for Joe to add "year" to his post as he it appears by the signature photos he may have several different years and the question may not be relevant to all years.
packick
John et. al.: This question applies to many different years and many different marques. So if John is asking to put a year in the title, it is not applicable to just one year. If you request is not adding the year, please clarify your request.
NTX5467
If there is an "asbestos" side, it should touch the exhaust pipe. It allows for sealing with the slight movement as the items expand and contract. BE SURE to tighten the related attaching bolts /nuts EVENLY and a little bit at a time until everything's "tight". Recheck after a few hot/cold cycles for good measure. That's how I'd do it. NTX5467

packick
Gee, OldTank has been at this game for a long time. And since he has installed the gasket "wrong" half the time, and his cars are mechanically sound, then maybe it doesn't matter which way they are installed? But NTX546's explanation makes sense. In other words, make sure that if the "asbestos" side is facing left (in on the passenger side) make sure it is facing left (out on the driver's side) or it confuses the car gods. Whatever you do, make sure it is the same from side to side, or your car might flip.
