Bill Harmatuk
Just disassembled my !030 Chrysler water pump and cleaned the gland nut. I have NOS lead packing and I have new- fangled graphite industrial packing. I can get the bees wax teflon, if need be. The shaft is surprisingly smooth where the packing makes contact. Whats the best to preserve the shaft from where?? I'm not worried about a drip every now and then either. Dont worry. I used to pack pumps for a living. Just asking. JFranklin
I would use the same packing material that the factory used if you have it NOS. I wouldn't use a packing that had string in it such as used in water faucets as it would tend to score the shaft.
cahartley
Graphite packing is still the gold standard in irrigation pumps.
Owen_Dyneto
I've used either graphited split rings or simple graphited cord packing in many auto water pumps over the years; properly installed it has a very long life and I couldn't think of a reason to ignore success and try something else.
Mark Shaw
Compression Packing from McMaster-Carr Multipurpose Packing These seals resist water, salt water, oil, mild acids, and mild alkalies. Broad-temperature seals are graphite-impregnated aramid for use in pumps and valves. They require lighter packing pressure than value seal, so they cause less friction for reduced shaft wear. Friartuck
I too use the square graphite from McMaster-Carr as Mark referenced. More importantly as Owen-Dyneteo hinted (split rings) is cutting each wrap on a miter and offset the miters so they don't overlap.

stakeside
Check at your local Ace Hardware. They have pump or water valve packing rope.
