Show Us Your Homemade Signs

Recommended Posts

A few weeks ago, Mr. Earl made a post about a sign that was up for auction.  $425 was a little steep for me, but I decided to make a repro for my dad's birthday.  Well, today was his birthday, so I'll share what I've been up to since the last thread.

First of all, I'm cheap, so I didn't go full size (67x41).  I just went with something that was in the shop and scaled the art to fit.  Sticking with the theme of fast & dirty, I set the corner radius to match a paint can.

Color choice was a shot in the dark.  Not quite what I hoped for, but it'll be ok for a first try.

I laid a layer of blue vinyl down for the two-tone background, then the white vinyl was applied to the blue.

I made a couple dummy blocks in the art to know where to space it, then floated it on soapy water to get the alignment right.

Matt, your sign turned out really nice.  Now, since you have the one side of the panel done, what you need to do is drive your Buick up the road about 45 miles to the big city of Hutchinson and take a photograph of the 'back' side of my BUICK SALES & SERVICE sign, which by the way, is exactly like Lamar's.

You could do the same artwork process on the back side and then you would have an authentic replica of a famous BUICK advertising sign.

Super nice.  Would you be interested in making one for me?   :)

I don't know that I could make these at a reasonable price, but if you are interested in a DIY kit, maybe we can work something out... ;)

We'll have to get up that way for sure.  I was pondering the back side, and it looks to me that the band across the middle varied from dealer to dealer.  If I could figure out what it would have said at the dealership that my grandpa bought his '56 from, or the Evansville dealership dad's uncle chuck owned, that's what I'd want to put there.  As of yet, I've got no clue on either dealership...

Wow Matt, the sign turned out great! What are the dimensions you ended up with. There is an appliance repair shop just down the road from me that I could probably get some refrigerator or washer/dryer sheet metal from. I may be interested in a "DIY kit". Couple questions. Will this vinyl stand up to outside weather. I have one that has been outside for going on 6 years and it is holding up well.

How big can you make letters/words.I am considering using a slide projector to project the below old sign wording onto a 6' X 8' metal sign, outlining and painting it in. Being able to use a vinyl template instead sure would be sweet.

The sheet metal I had was 34 inches wide, so it ended up 34" x 20.75"

The material I use is rated at 6 years, which means it should still look good 6 years from now, but no guarantees afterwards.  I know a lot of folks will spray with clear to increase longevity.  I can also get a 10 year film, but I don't generally keep that around.

One issue with the selling signs or kits is the potential copyright issues.  Does the club have anyone who can advise as to which logos may still be held and require licencing, and which ones are public domain?
