I'm guessing, and this is a guess, that it started life as a "cab and chassis"and then had a screen side body put on it. (Dodge sold 4 versions of their car chassis through out the 30s as 'Commercial Cars'- 'flat faced cowl and chassis','windshield cowl and chassis','cab and chassis' and then the the chassis with their body on it,pick-up,panel van etc. This one appears to be a cab and chassis.)

The June/July 2015 WPC News featured reproductions of ads for 1946 Dodge trucks. Shown are the 1/2 ton Model WC and the 1 ton Model WD-21 Canopy Trucks. The 1/2 ton appears to have the same roof as your truck. Wood covered with a weatherproof fabric. The 1 ton appears to have had a metal roof. The sides and rear of these canopy trucks had roll down screens and/or weatherproof curtains. Canopy trucks had a single bucket seat with the cargo floor extending forward to where a passenger seat would be located on other truck models. The 1/2 ton had a 116 inch wheelbase and the 1 ton a 133 inch wheelbase. Dual rear wheels were an option on the 1 ton. The Canopy truck was not offered in the 3/4 ton series.
