overdrive lock

For all of the techs on this site. I know there is somebody who knows.

 

How do I lock up the over drive, In other words make the transmission stay in over drive.

Since the transmission is all hydraulic control, high gear cannot be selected  by itself, however one of the pins in the ALDL can be  grounded to lock the torque converter clutch. I don't have the FSM diagram in front of me but the TCC has a contact inside the ALDL.

If you lock the TCC by wiring it, it will stall the engine when you stop. Not a good idea. AFAIR the 91 has an "E" trans and you can play with that.

Padgett, I realize that. I don't plan on having it locked all the time, just when I want to.

Is there a way?

As I mentioned before, I believe it is pin "F" in the ALDL connector. Ground the pin to lock the converter clutch.  As mentioned, use with great discretion.

If you are wanting keep the converter from unlocking during hard acceleration you are making a big mistake. The little clutch inside the converter is not designed to withstand the maximum torque of a stock 3800 much less the torque of a SC engine.

Guys, Thanks for all of the warnings. I will take the advice.

I only plan on using the over-drive lock-up when I am at cruising speeds, so I don't have the transmission coming out of over drive 

when ever it feels like it. I want it to stay in over drive at high speeds only.

I forgot to mention that pin "A" should be ground, so a connection from "A to F" should lock the converter. I made pins to insert for contacts from a short piece of  solid 12ga. copper wire, flattened with a hammer until they slide in snuggly, and then solder the "pin" to a smaller gauge wire for connection. In my case it was for a data line for a laptop program I have.
