Guest
What are the big costs taht come up during a restoration for items like engine overhaul of a straight eight or a paint job? I'm hearing a paint job could run between $4000 to $5000 for a coupe.
LeRoy
Guest
Your in the ballpark on a correct paint job and engine rebuild. I have heard of and have been quoted both jobs in the $4000 to $6000 range. Body work would even be more if the car needed it.
Guest
39 Special is probably correct on those figures.Because of that kind of pay-thru-the-nose mentality that so many in this hobby possess, I learned to paint & do my own work of that nature. So if you have a good head on your shoulders, you might want to learn to do it yourself instead of supporting that kind of greed. You'll feel better in the long run
Guest
Same mentality in restoring old tractors or should I say that its starting so I try to do as much as I can but parts are always an issue. Was wondering if I don't do a full frame off restore is there something I can do to protect and seal (make it more presentable) the undercarriage to stop the rusting process? I was thinking about an undercoat of some type?
LeRoy

quote:
Originally posted by lotsabuicks:
39 Special is probably correct on those figures.Because of that kind of pay-thru-the-nose mentality that so many in this hobby possess, I learned to paint & do my own work of that nature. So if you have a good head on your shoulders, you might want to learn to do it yourself instead of supporting that kind of greed. Bill Stoneberg
LeRoy,
I cant talk about Labor but I do know that I spent about 2K on all the parts for my 1950 Straight 8 engine. It has not gone to the machine shop yet but I plan on another 1K there.
The only original parts I will have when done is the block and the head. All parts inside will be rebuilt or new.
Hope this helps.
Bill
