42dodgeguy
If I wanted to remove the shift lever from the column of an 84 oldsmobile (or any other G.M of the period) and replace it with a nicer or different one, would it be possible to just punch out the pin and do the swap without a bunch of springs and other junk getting mislocated inside the housing? Would like to hear from anyone who's actully done this. Thanks.
joe_padavano
You can remove the lever without the internal parts coming loose. I can't say that I've ever tried to reinstall the lever, however. Be aware that the retaining pin is swaged like a rivet and the only way to get it out is to drill the end. That doesn't allow you to re-form it after installing the new lever.
