Thinking on replacing my car's engine instead of rebuilding it. Engine was made in around 2005. Brand new never used. it shouldn't have any problems I'd think can any one with more experience corroborate? Thanks!

Hi Roger..

There is a new Saab 9-3 2.0T engine in the market for my 2003 Saab. The seller states it is brand new and rolled out in 2005.  My concern is that it has been sitting around for 10 years and is "brand new:.  Is this a legitimate concern? Also, the seller is asking premium price for it as well.  What are your thoughts to possibly purchasing it or is there additional questions I should ask or look into.  Thank you for your assistance.

If it is in the original factory package and has been stored indoors it is probably ok. A SAAB dealer should be able to confirm if it will fit your car. They made changes every year. Something as seemingly trivial as a different fuel injection system can cost thousands of $$$$ to retrofit.

Thank you for your suggestions Mr. O'Toole. I'm grateful for your insight and additional points to look for. This knowledge will be invaluable while I'm looking for an engine - especially the point about about the fuel injection system. I would like to thank everyone for their quick and friendly response to my questions. Happy Memorial Day!

If this engine uses a TIMING BELT instead of a TIMING CHAIN, the belt will have taken a "SET", and should be changed, as should all belts and hoses if included with the engine. If the engine has not been rotated in these 10 years, check to ensure that you can turn it, and that the piston rings are not "stuck" (rusted to the cylinder walls). Type of storage really matters!
