my31buick
Ok guys, I have never had to crate ship anything. But it appears I need another engine block. Have any of you ever had to have anything freight shipped? If so, who did you use and would you use them again?

Marty Roth
A friend recently advised that he was able to have fast, relatively low-cost shipping by getting with a FASTENAL location, where their trucks will move bulks items to other of their locations

Marty Roth
Yes, that FASTENAL, the nut and bolt company, They will ship a pallet, large odd-sized items, etc...and from what I was told, much more affordably.

trimacar
Fastenal does 3PL (third party logistics), that is how it's listed on their website. You have to pre-arrange and pre-pay, then you bring a crate to a Fastenal store, the recipient picks it up at a Fastenal store. That's the only drawback, you have to have a store close to you! I shipped a large fender in a crate, 6 feet long and 3 feet high/wide, 110 pounds, from Virginia to northern Michigan, $150. They do tell you no guarantee on exactly when it will get there, but in my case it was less than a week.

jpage
Many times a local trucking company can ship it for you by LTL freight (less than truckload). Problem is that you are responsible to crate it and load it. An engine can probably just be strapped to a wooden pallet but the loading can be a problem. The Fastenal connection might work or if you know any local companies that ship with your local trucking companies you might be able to work a deal with them to load it for you if you can transport it and crate it on site. Good luck!
trimacar
Be careful with LTL shipping. For example, if you just pur "car engine" on the bill of lading, they may charge you freight for a new engine. Specify "used engine", and freight cost will be half or less than a new engine. There are a LOT of different rate sheets when shipping less than truckload....
