SOLD 4/7/2015

Thanks to all those who responded.

This rare and original early 1930s Ford/HAL DOHC Sprint car is being offered from the estate of noted Ford collector, historian and author George DeAngelis. George purchased this race car in the 1960s from a home in Detroit. What is neat about this car is that it is not your typical sprint car that is built up from speed equipment and a lot of home made and/or modified Ford chassis parts. The frame is certainly a production frame. It has a tube style front axle with parallel, semi-eliptic springs on the front. The steering is a Franklin cross mount steering. The wheels are 17" Dayton. The rear end is a Model B pickup rear end with a locked differential and transverse spring and the car has large- center, Hartford shock absorbers. The transmission is a Model A/B style-transmission case with in/out gears. The engine is a Model B block with a dual overhead camshaft HAL head, special pistons, rods, Winfield carburetors, side mount magneto drive, original finned block cover, etc. The body is original to the car, although you can tell the head rest was added to the tail at a later date. The hood is new, but the body, front radiator shell and grille are original.

George started the restoration many years ago. The chassis and frame are restored, the Dayton wire wheels were restored and new Excelsior tires mounted, the front end and possibly the rear end restored, and body work was under way. The engine was disassembled and remains that way today. The HAL engine has all of is parts including timing chains, sprockets, chain covers, valve/cam shaft covers, intake manifolds, valve train components, header assembly, etc. There are some extra HAL parts as well such as timing chain housings, manifolds, etc. The cylinder head casting itself will need some machining and repairs. It was magnafluxed and there are cracks in the combustion chamber/valve seat area. There are new, custom made pistons a rebuilt flywheel assembly, new header assembly and several other new parts for the engine re-assembly. The body/seat assembly are just sitting on the chassis. The grill has been re-plated and there are new full length belly pans. This is a great opportunity to acquire a rare original three-spring sprint car that is loaded with rare and desirable period speed equipment. Lots of potential here for those who appreciate and are knowledgable about real vintage race cars. The price is 18,000.00 which is far less than the value of the parts and the car is being sold with a bill of sale only. It is located near Detroit, MI. Please call 734-730-4274 or email: motoringicons@hotmail.com for detailed photos of everything that is included in the sale or for more information. Thank you very much.

Just a short note. A local collector has a similar car with an entire HAL engine, not just the head. These are very neat cars. My local collector has a bunch of history and photos of HAL powered cars. He is currently in the middle of rebuilding his motor, and making parts. Who ever buys this project, feel free to contact me and I will get you his contact information. Ed
