I know the person was kidding when they said split the difference. But I have used an 8 volt battery in my 40 Fords. To give em' that extra ump to crank.

This brigs a good question: was the 8 volts battery original of any car ? I always thought it was a battery type created to empower the starter.

No, I have been told that no manufacturer used a four cell, 8 volt battery. However dealerships used them. When Ford and Mercury went to overhead valves in 1954, a lot of flat head parts (starters, transmissions & electrical) were retained. The voltage regulator would have to be reset. The generator current limit in the voltage regulator would have to be lessened to keep the generator from burning out. Eight volts is all Kettering ignition will handle. It is no longer worth fried headlamps and radio. The dealer or seller would say it was factory.
