Guest Posted March 24, 2002 Posted March 24, 2002 Just picked up a beautiful 58 Sedan this weekend. I got a deal because the starter was out of the car. I had it bench tested and put a new solenoid on it - works fine. However, when I bolted it all up and hit the switch, the starter spins without hitting the flywheel. If I attempt to try to start it after about 10 tries, it finally connects with the flywheel and spins the engine. Is there an adjustment that needs to be done or ?
The Old Guy Posted March 24, 2002 Posted March 24, 2002 It sounds to me like the bendix is bad. The overrunning clutch has given out. The round unit on the bendix is a clutch that keeps the starter from turning too fast if it is left engaged after the engine starts. If that wears out you will not be able to engage the starter as that is what drives the starter gear.
Al Smeraldo Posted March 25, 2002 Posted March 25, 2002 Did you check the teeth on the flywheel? Is the starter the correct one? Some starters have longer "noses" than others. Al
Al Smeraldo Posted March 25, 2002 Posted March 25, 2002 Just thought of something else. Some of the GM starters used shims in their mounting. These were the ones that the bolts are vertical. Al
