Guest Posted March 16, 2002 Posted March 16, 2002 I’m working on a body off restoration of a 34 Chevy Master 2-dr and have a question regarding the material used as backing on the side and rear sheet metal of the body. It appears that a fiberboard material approx. ¼” thick was glued to the side panels just behind the door lock pillars and under the rear window behind the rear seat. The material is adhered to the sheet metal by a black tar-like substance that acts like common roofing cement. A similar cement appears to have been used to glue a burlap like fabric to the floor pan under the rear seat. I suspect this panel material provided some acoustic and thermal insulation. Has anyone found a suitable replacement material and adhesive to use in restorations?

palbuick Posted March 18, 2002 Posted March 18, 2002 This material was used as in insulator and sound deadner in the 30s and 40 cars. It has a waffle style pattern. I recently purchased severa sheets from Cars Inc. www.buick-parts.com.
Jim Schilf / palbuick@aol.com
