Guest Posted March 11, 2002 Posted March 11, 2002 Just picked up a 58 SDV from a 25+ year storage. When I turn the key, the lights don't dim and the solenoid doesn't click, however the fan blower motor shuts off indicating that the switch is still good? The following has been done: New battery, new solenoid, and the starter has been bench-tested and performs as normal. The motor turns freely. I know that this is an electrical gremlin, but not sure what to test/replace next. HELP!
Guest Posted March 12, 2002 Posted March 12, 2002 Use a test light to check for voltage at the starter. Sounds like an open circuit.
The Old Guy Posted March 12, 2002 Posted March 12, 2002 It may be the neutral saftey switch. You can either jumper the switch or go to the starter and bypass the whole system by jumping from the main battery post to the solenoid
Dave@Moon Posted March 12, 2002 Posted March 12, 2002 If it isn't the neutral saftey switch it could still be the ignition switch. When turning it to the "start" position it could be cutting out the accessory circuts but not quite engaging the solenoid circut (possibly due to a dirty contact).
Check for continuity with the key in "start" from the battery to the neutral safety switch, then to the soleniod. That should narrow it down. Chances are it is probably the neutral switch.
Of course it could also be a bad fuse, wire or connection in the circut as well. Trace and inspect those to be sure.
