28 chev steering box

Any ideas on how to remove the play from the steering arm (pittman??) on a 28. From observation, I somehow need to move the gear deeper into the worm. Bush is not worn and is central in casing and new bearings fitted. Thanks........

It Would be nice if someone with a manual would answer. Most steering gear that I have worked on have adjustments for worm end play,cross shaft end play, and mesh adjustment. The mesh is usually adjusted by turning an eccentric bushing. It may have a clamp nut where the steering column enters and when loosened adjustment can be made. The wheels must be turned straight ahead when adjustment is made. Even when play is removed in the straight ahead position, there will be play when wheels are turned either way. Good luck, Curt

I do not know how the 28 is set up, but the 29-30 is adjusted by adding or removing gaskets form the side cover.<P>Dan

28 chevy uses same hardware as my 28 pontiac if box is same loosen clamp at top of box and screw down adjustment nut at top of box. my book said 1 inch play in steering wheel is proper.tighten clamp.

I agree with Mark. The nut on top is about 4" long and it tightens against the half-nuts. This removes the play in the pittman arm. 1" movement in the steering wheel works for me.
