Guest Posted February 28, 2002 Posted February 28, 2002 i have in my possession a all brass " Heavy
Vehicle Type" pump type fire extinguisher made by the Pyrene manufacturing co. of Newark New
Jersey. I am looking for info on this.
Guest Posted February 28, 2002 Posted February 28, 2002 I've got a bunch of them, I think they used carbon tet and were made into the '60's
ronbarn Posted February 28, 2002 Posted February 28, 2002 Polish it, make it look pretty, proudly display it, but don't even let any temptation to use it enter your mind.
Dave@Moon Posted March 1, 2002 Posted March 1, 2002 p.s. If it sloshes when you shake it, try not to mention that fact to your local EPA hazardous waste investigator!
novaman Posted March 2, 2002 Posted March 2, 2002 Stupid question here. But most of these extinughsers are older than me. What is in them that the EPA would have a hissy over and why?
Guest Posted March 2, 2002 Posted March 2, 2002 Here's a link that describes Carbon tetrachloride toxic effects.
http://www.eco-usa.net/toxics/ccl4.shtml
Hope this helps
I may be completely wrong, if so please disregard my opinion.
novaman Posted March 3, 2002 Posted March 3, 2002 Thanks Chuck. Like I said "stupid question". I wasn't able to put 2 & 2 together. I knew about the stuff in refrigerant and aresol cans. Just didn't expect it in a fire extinguisher.
Thanks for joining us. I personally have enjoyed reading your posts and have found a bunch of useful infromation. Thanks.
Guest Posted March 5, 2002 Posted March 5, 2002 I have a "Pyrene"unit just a bit bigger than the ones you usually see,I glass- beaded the handle and started to polish the rest, but got busy and did'nt finish it. Intend to take it to a swap-meet,but it would not be too hard to talk me out of it. mrbuick714@webtv,net
Guest Posted March 5, 2002 Posted March 5, 2002 Hell bells man, I'll GIVE ya the ones gathering dust in my grease pit, but ya gotta take the liquid too!
Guest Posted March 5, 2002 Posted March 5, 2002 Hey All,
They are real good for knocking down wasp nests. Just don't breath in the stuff or get it on your skin as carbon tet. is readily absorbed.
Guest Posted March 6, 2002 Posted March 6, 2002 I used to use a product called Zep! for knocking out wasps and hornets, you could count them as they dropped, only problem was my cat would attempt to finish them off when they still had life in them, stupid cat would start to chew on 'em,get stung in the mouth and run like hell with a truly blood-curdling yell. she never learned though.
Guest Posted March 6, 2002 Posted March 6, 2002 I also encountered one of these pyrene units on an original Auburn Sedan that I pulled out of 41 years of storage. It was "beautifully" mounted under the hood on the firewall. WONDERFUL!! I still haven't figured out how the "Moe" who put it there planned on getting at the sob if he had an engine fire.
Guest Posted March 6, 2002 Posted March 6, 2002 Ha,ha, That's good, like locking the barn from the inside.
I have an electrified renault that had one mounted under the dash, you could see where the unit leaked by the perfectly round hole in the carpet.
