Guest
I have a 1928 Packard that has a Tropic Aire heater that was installed by the dealer at the time of delivery(some 74 years ago) and was needing to find out if anyone out there knows what the "correct" fittings (on radiator hoses?)looked like and how it was originally plumbed in
ply33
I expect a judge will jump in here on this but I believe that unless Packard offered that particular heater as a factory option, you will suffer point deductions if you leave it in the car. I happen to have a Hadees heater that was in stalled when the car was less than 2 years old (based on a survey of auto industry ads for that heater). I am keeping it as it is authentic to the car and I don't care about judging deductions. Make up your own mind.
As to the hose connections: There are adaptors to connect the heater hoses to the radiator hoses. I was looking for something to patch up my original ones when I found the same thing over the counter at my local auto supply. The good local auto supply, not the chain auto supply. I think that some big trucks apparently still use the same thing. It is a tube the correct size to fit the heater hose one that is threaded at one end. There is an outside plate, with a curve that is correct to fit the ouside diameter of the radiator hose and a washer also curved to fit the inside diameter of the radiator hose. You drill a hole in the radiator hose and attach this adaptor then attach the heater hose to the adaptor.
It has been about three or four years since I last bought one of these adaptors, so I cannot exactly remember what the official name is nor how much it cost. I don't remember is being very much money.
Guest
This Tropic-Aire heater is listed in the Price List on Packard Approved Accessories, catalog #500 march 1,1929...it is part #PA-2340 and sold for $42.50 installed...
Since it was Packard approved does that make it O.K. to re-install or will it be (points deduction)questioned by the judges? John N. Packard
ral,
Have that documentation in the car with you when you show the car and you will be fine. Since the heater is listed in Packard literature, it is an approved accessory.
jnp
