Guest Posted December 5, 2001 Posted December 5, 2001 The manual for my 1927 Chevrolet calls for 600W oil in the transmission and differential. I stopped by NAPA today and found that they do not have this oil. Should I look for a supplier that does have it or just accept the heaviest gear oil available at NAPA?
Guest Posted December 5, 2001 Posted December 5, 2001 Go to "SEARCH" at the top of this page and do a search for 600W gear oil. There have been several very complete discussions on the subject previously right here on the forum. It is doubtful that those of us who gave extensive input previously are going to go through the same exedcise again. ~ hvs
Guest spu Posted December 10, 2001 Posted December 10, 2001 I just purchased some Lubriplate SPO-299. This is supposedly 600W equivalent and will not attack brass, bronze or silver. I purchased this through Restoration Supply Co. in Reno, NV. PH: 775-825-5663.
You can also go to the Lubriplate website and check out the rest of their lubricating products at Lubriplate
Guest Posted December 10, 2001 Posted December 10, 2001 Havoline 140 GL-4. It has to be GL-4 or it attacks brass/bronze.
Guest Posted December 11, 2001 Posted December 11, 2001 600 w is available through any model T supplier. Try Langs in Mass.
[ 12-10-2001: Message edited by: pre16 ]
Guest Posted June 24, 2002 Posted June 24, 2002 You can obtain 600W at any Model A parts supplier. Visit any steam engine site and they use the same there. 600W oil is steam engine oil. Mobil makes a 600W lubricant, but the suplier I had found was in England. I have personally been using Lubriplate on my A this past year. I am trying to determine if it works well in all seasonal weather. My A is a daily driver and sits for long hours in the heat, rain, sleet and snow. I wanted an oil or gear lubricant would be used in the tranny and rear end and would get up and go on a moment's notice. I was not satisfied with a Chevron lithium product I used over a year ago. It took several blocks of driving to not feel stiff in the tranny after the car sat out in the snow all day at work. So far, the Lubriplate has worked well. The cost is a bit higher, but so far I am satisfied. I am not certain about the Lubriplate site, but I was able to find mine locally in Wichita Falls, Texas.
Good luck on her,
Huey
[ 06-23-2002: Message edited by: coupe1942 ]
