Grease between steering wheel and shaft?

I removed my steering wheel on my 1923 Buick, the nut was only hand tight and there was some play. The shaft is steel, tapered and keyed. The wheel hub seems to be aluminum. When I replace the wheel, should I lightly grease the shaft so it won't freeze to the wheel? I've tried it and when I tighten up the nut I got no movement. I don't want to have to use a puller to remove the wheel but I also don't want to have the wheel loose in my hands while I'm driving down the road. Was I correct in greasing the shaft or have I screwed up?
------------------
Craig H
BCA #37372
