65 front fender molding clips

I ordered the kit for all the exterior molding attachments. Im struggling with the clips for the piece at on the front fender. The three studs are not snug in the molding, I tried rotating them 90 degrees to lock them in which helped but by doing so they dont fit snug in the hole on the fender anymore. But if I dont rotate them, they snap in snuggly. Whats the proper installation of the clips to have the molding fit tightly?

I should add that the clips in the kit are different than what came off the car. My problem is the car didnt have a passenger side molding, so I have to come up with something
