3MP, For the life of me, I can't remember where on your car is the DATA plate with the info on paint.
Where did you get this info on the Gray again?

Your car came in (2) Grays. 1- Dawn Gray Code 500. This is a dark Gray. 2- Dove Gray Code 505 506 ( I don't know what thats about.) This is a light Gray.
Black is Code 100. If you find a ID tag on the car see if any of these numbers show up.
Check firewall, upper cowl, glove box, ect.
Always check the firewall or hidden areas for signs of repainting. I don't believe anyone stripped and repainted your car.
See if this helps,

------------------
Rick Hoover
AACA # 409952
Hershey Region

Rick,
An article in my company's newsletter 10 years ago said the car was purchased grey. The article was written by the car's second owner, who is the nephew of the deceased original owner. I am the 3rd owner.
It could be that he forgot what color the car was when he wrote the article. But there are signs of a respray. For example the emblem on the front of the car is body color when I am sure it should not be. A few things like that. I will look harder for some sign of a previous color but so far all the spots where the current topcoat is compromised, all I see underneath is a reddish primer. Maybe the grey is under the primer. Or maybe there is no grey.
Thanks for the paint codes. I will look for a body tag tonight.
Cheers, 3MP

Man you guys are good. Paint code 500-904. Not only that but I very carefully scrutinized one of the spots of body damage, and sure enough, if you look closely, there's a place where some grey paint is peeking out from under the reddish primer!! It really is a grey car! Wooo-hoooo! Wow, this is really exciting. Now I gotta pester the nephew to see if he can document when it got repainted. He supposedly has some old photos that he hasn't loaned me yet. Thanks guys! This is so cool. What a group!
I wonder what it looks like? Do you suppose the AACA has archives of color photos of cars?
Cheers, 3MP

A small mystery here. According to an article written in the company newsletter, my Chrysler was originally grey. However the car sitting in my garage is most assuredly quite black. Also in the few places where the paint is coming off, there is no sign of any grey. BUT, there are hints on the car here & there that the car might have been repainted. I suppose it is possible that someone totally stripped the old grey before applying the black. The car has never been restored so it would have been an "in-service" change.
SO--
On my other cars, if I wanted to determine the original color, I would just find the paint code on the body tag and look it up. Does this trick work on a 1940 Chrysler? If so, where do I look for the code on the car? What resources are available to decode it?
I think I would rather have a grey car than a black one so I am hoping it has been repainted for some reason. wink.gif
Cheers, 3MP
------------------
aka Bry in Virginia
40 Chrysler Royal Coupe, 4.0L I6 M3 (restoration project)
70 Dodge Charger, 5.2L V8 A3 (hot rod project)
74 Dodge 100 Adventurer, 5.2L V8 A3 (works for a living)

Rick makes a good point. A visit to the Headquarters and the Library and Research Center should be a priority if you are in the area. However, you can go to the Library button on the home page, print out a copy of the Research Request form and snailmail it to the L&RC to determine if they have what you want. This is a very inexpensive transaction for AACA members and has proven very beneficial for a lot of our hobbiests. Try it 3MP and let us know the results.
