Guest
I have a '60 le sabre with 93k original miles on it. Recently someone mentioned that I should have the generator replaced with an alternator. He said Buick generators were questionable and that he is suprised mine lasted this long. Would this be better or should I just rebuild the generator? I'd rather keep it stock.
Also, anyone know where I can purchase a dome light assembly?
Dave@Moon
I love it, finally a really good thread to use the light bulb icon!!!
Generators work fine, there's really no need to go to an alternator unless you plan on installing a lot of heavy draw accessories and using them while the car is at idle. The advantage o an alternator is that it produces more current at low rpm's, and you can run your a/c and jam to Dr. Dre at high volume infinately while idling through the B-K. If that's not your lifestyle, you don't need the alternator.
As for the dome light, the various vendors listed in Hemmings should be able to track one down. The Buick Farm in particular should be able to help you. This is a tough piece to find, and expect it to be quite expensive. If a used one will do (you can alway find a new lens and rechrome the bezel), watch for people parting out 1960's. CKorey has a thread for one on this site, you can contact him at buick60lvr@aol.com.
Good luck!
Guest
The person who told you this is probably the same one who will tell you that you have to install a newer motor (we all know which one ) because yours is "oblsolete" and hard to get parts for. Listen to Dave@Moon. I just don't know how we survived all those years with flathead Fords , generators, drum brakes and carburators!!!
------------------
buickfam@aol.com
Life long Buick Fan.
1965 Skylark H/T
1965 Gran Sport Convertible
1948 Chevy Pickup with 401 Buick.
